Sonic the Hedgehog 90s and 00s Video games
Back in 1991 Sega was marketing the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive against Nintendo’s Super Mario, to gain sales and market share. They had fair sales up until that point, but they needed a heavy hitter to really hit Nintendo hard. But they really didn’t have any one character. They had several real world athletes on the cover of their games, like Joe Montanna Football, but those celebrities couldn’t stick as a true mascot for the system. Enter Sonic the Hedgehog. He was fast, cool, and had an attitude. The polar opposite of the fat and slow Super Mario. That became the packed in game with the Genesis, and it just took off! Sonic was cool, having his own tv show, lunchboxes, ice cream, magazine, and of course video games. Sonic was truly changing things, taking on Nintendo and Mario head on.
And although Genesis would eventually just barely be defeated by Nintendo’s Super NES, Sonic was still a major factor. He is the reason the Genesis for a long time had the biggest market share in the United States and elsewhere. He is the reason teenage boys would play Sega over Nintendo, because he was cooler and fast. Sonic the Hedgehog was a major factor in the early days of the Genesis, and would always be a factor for Sega’s sales as a game maker. Sonic the Hedghog 2 was a major game as well, introducing Tails as a playable character and Sonic’s buddy. Two players could play at once, one as Sonic and one as Tails. This would be a major reason that the game was a massive smash, because it was just plain fun to play the game with a friend.
Sonic 3 would come out too, and would also be a hit along with Sonic and Knuckles later on. Sega would release a lot of Sonic games over the years, most of them being major successes. But once Sega started making games for the other game makers, Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox, the quality of Sonic games would reduce drastically. Sonic Heroes, a game for all the above mentioned consoles, would be an alright game with fair gameplay. But that would be the dive for Sonic. All Sonic games for the Nintendo Wii would be a laughable joke, excluding the Olympics games. Sonic and the Secret rings would get critical fails all across the boards around the world. Same for the sequel game, Sonic and the Black Knight. Sonic the Hedgehog 06 was an epic fail and the lowest point for Sonic, with low sales and a story line that would fall flat on many occasions. There would be an occasional Sonic game that was medium to fair rated, like the Sonic Riders games, Sonic Rivals for the PSP, and the various Sonic Nintendo DS games. But for the most part Sonic was falling fast, and it wasn’t helped with Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic Unleashed. All those games were so bad, that most people just gave up on Sonic all together. When Sega quit making gaming hardware most people seemed to support them for Sonic, but when he was dying fast they had nowhere to go but away from the former great company.
But in 2010 Sega and Sonic were on their way up, with releases like Sonic Colors and Sonic the Hedgehog 4. Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing was generally well received as well. Most fans are skeptic of new Sonic games, and rightfully so with so many bad games in the last 10 years, but these games were much better in quality and sales. Sonic Colors was the foremost of these games, selling almost 2 million within it’s first few months out. It will likely exceed that number in 2011. Sega has recently announced Sonic Generations for Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, a 20th anniversary game for Sonic. It’s looking very well, from the trailer anyways. But only time will tell if Sonic will continue his move upward. Sonic 4 episode 2 is coming this year as well, so maybe Sonic will finally go back to his hit status of the 90s again. All signs point to yes.

Carnavas $8.50 If the idea of basement tapes made by Billy Corgan and Doug Martsch appeals to you, say hello to your new favorite band. Silversun Pickups are fairly early adopters of the 1990s revival, but they’re not grunge dorks or anything, and they’re from L.A. so they dress nice. Their music updates the anthemic but gauzy heavy rock sound that Veruca Salt and the Smashing Pumpkins had down pat. Thankfully, … |
